Meaning and contemplation

English and Bengali meaning notes follow the text above. The small references identify the numbered text units in this reader; the contemplation lines offer a devotional application.

Text unit 1 ↑

Radiance, throne and crown

Meditate on the Goddess, radiant like the red bandhuka flower, seated upon five skulls, wearing a crown of jewels and a shining crescent moon, and a garland of heads.

Contemplation: Let the form described by the mantra become the centre of attention: red radiance, the crescent moon and the sacred seat.

Text units 2–3 ↑

Knowledge, japa, blessing and fearlessness

Remember daily the three-eyed, red-robed Goddess, full in her maternal form. She holds a book and rosary and displays the gestures of granting boons and freedom from fear. She is honoured in the Uttaramnaya.

Contemplation: Contemplate the book as sacred knowledge, the rosary as continuous remembrance, and the two gestures as grace and fearlessness.

Text unit 4 ↑

Athava — an alternative meditation

Athava means “or.” It introduces the alternative Chandika meditation that follows.

Contemplation: Read this marker as a transition between the two dhyana forms.

Text unit 5 ↑

Chandi as Vishveshvari

May Chandi, who overcomes Madhu and Kaitabha, Mahishasura, Dhumralochana, Chanda and Munda, Raktabija, Shumbha and Nishumbha, protect me. She is the supreme giver of accomplishment, the Lady of the universe, accompanied by nine crores of divine forms.

Contemplation: Hold the many forms within one presence: Vishveshvari, the Divine Mother of the whole universe.
