Meaning and contemplation
English and Bengali meaning notes follow the text above. The small references identify the numbered text units in this reader; the contemplation lines offer a devotional application.
Viniyoga and salutation
The opening states the seer, metre and deity of the hymn and dedicates its recitation, as part of the Saptashati, to the delight of Jagadamba. Om namash Chandikayai means “Om, salutation to Chandika.”
Contemplation: Begin with salutation and the conscious offering of the recitation.
The names of the Mother
The hymn praises Chamunda, who removes affliction, the all-pervading Goddess and Kalaratri. It then salutes Jayanti, Mangala, Kali, Bhadrakali, Kapalini, Durga, Shiva, Kshama, Dhatri, Svaha and Svadha.
Contemplation: Allow each name to disclose a distinct quality while remembering one Divine Mother.
The recurring prayer
Rupam dehi, jayam dehi, yasho dehi, dvisho jahi means “Grant beauty or a worthy form; grant victory; grant renown; overcome those who bear hostility.” These verses address the Goddess through her victories over the named asuras.
Contemplation: In contemplation, connect the repeated prayer with noble character, steadiness and the overcoming of hostility; this is an application of the prayer rather than a replacement of its wording.
Refuge and devoted praise
The hymn addresses the Goddess whose feet are honoured, whose form and deeds exceed thought, and who removes misfortune, suffering and wrongdoing. The repeated request for form, victory and renown continues.
Contemplation: Let repeated praise deepen attention to the Goddess rather than become hurried repetition.
Auspiciousness, well-being and learning
The devotee asks for good fortune, health, deep happiness, welfare, abundant prosperity, strength, learning and honour. The hymn pictures the jewels of gods and asuras bowing at Ambika’s feet.
Contemplation: Offer the aspirations named in the verse with gratitude and a clear purpose.
Power and the joy of devotees
These verses salute the Goddess who breaks the pride of the asuras, is praised by Brahma, Krishna, Shiva and Indra, and gives joy to her devotees.
Contemplation: Contemplate strength that is joined with devotion and humility.
Companionship and passage across samsara
The prayer asks for a pleasing, compatible wife and then invokes the mountain-born Goddess as the one who carries the devotee across the difficult ocean of worldly existence.
Contemplation: Let the crossing of samsara gather the individual wishes into a larger movement toward liberation.
Closing dedication
The closing verse places this hymn before the great Saptashati recitation and speaks of receiving a rare boon through devoted worship. The final line marks the completion of Argala Stotram.
Contemplation: Proceed next to Devi Kavacha in this 22-step sequence.
