Meaning and contemplation
English and Bengali meaning notes follow the text above. The small references identify the numbered text units in this reader; the contemplation lines offer a devotional application.
The opening and Shiva’s address
After salutation to Ganesha, the opening identifies Sadashiva as seer and dedicates the practice. Shiva introduces Kunjika Stotram to Devi as the hymn by whose mantra-power Chandi japa becomes auspicious.
গণেশপ্রণামের পর সদাশিবকে ঋষি উল্লেখ করে জপ নিবেদন করা হয়েছে। শিব দেবীকে কুঞ্জিকাস্তোত্র পরিচয় দেন, যার মন্ত্রপ্রভাবে চণ্ডীজপ শুভ হয়।
Contemplation: Begin with reverence and attend to the dialogue framing the hymn.
Kunjika — the key
The hymn praises Kunjika as a secret key to Durga Patha, listing the other recitation limbs and asserting the sufficiency of Kunjika in its own praise. This passage also names traditional ritual operations.
স্তোত্রে কুঞ্জিকাকে দুর্গাপাঠের গুপ্ত চাবিকাঠি বলা হয়েছে। অন্যান্য পাঠাঙ্গের উল্লেখ করে নিজস্ব মাহাত্ম্যে কুঞ্জিকার পূর্ণতা ঘোষণা করা হয়েছে; কয়েকটি প্রচলিত তান্ত্রিক ক্রিয়ার নামও এসেছে।
Contemplation: In this complete reader, retain the full 22-step sequence while receiving Kunjika as its closing text.
The central mantra
Om aim hrim klim Chamundayai vicche invokes Chamunda through sacred seed syllables. The following commands jvalaya, jvala and prajvala invoke kindling and blazing. Svaha completes the offering.
“ওঁ ঐং হ্রীং ক্লীং চামুণ্ডায়ৈ বিচ্চে”—বীজধ্বনির মাধ্যমে চামুণ্ডার আহ্বান। “জ্বালয়, জ্বল, প্রজ্বল” প্রজ্বলনের আহ্বান; “স্বাহা” নিবেদনের সমাপ্তি।
Contemplation: Bija syllables are sacred sounds, not ordinary words with a single literal English equivalent.
Mantra radiance and awakening
The extended seed-syllable passages invoke illumination and the removal of obstruction. The prose-like commands are followed by salutations to the Goddess in her victorious forms and the request: “Awaken, Great Goddess; fulfil my japa.”
বিস্তৃত বীজধ্বনি ও নির্দেশমূলক শব্দে দীপ্তি এবং প্রতিবন্ধকতা দূর করার আহ্বান। তারপর অসুরবিজয়িনী দেবীকে প্রণাম ও প্রার্থনা: হে মহাদেবী, জাগ্রত হোন, আমার জপ সিদ্ধ করুন।
Contemplation: Keep the seed syllables intact and place attention upon the prayer to awaken the recitation.
The hymn explains its own syllables
The hymn associates aim with creation, hrim with protection and klim with desire. It praises the Goddess as seed-form and mantra-form, as giver of boons and fearlessness.
স্তোত্রে ঐংকে সৃষ্টি, হ্রীংকে প্রতিপালন এবং ক্লীংকে কামরূপের সঙ্গে যুক্ত করা হয়েছে। বীজরূপা, মন্ত্ররূপা, বরদায়িনী ও অভয়দায়িনী দেবীকে প্রণাম।
Contemplation: Let the meanings given by the hymn illuminate the sound without reducing the mantra to ordinary prose.
Speech and the fierce Mother
Seed-syllable groups invoke Shiva’s consort, the sovereign of speech, Kunjika, Kalika, Bhairavi and Bhavani, asking for auspiciousness and offering repeated salutations.
বীজধ্বনির গুচ্ছে শিবের শক্তি, বাকের অধীশ্বরী, কুঞ্জিকা, কালিকা, ভৈরবী ও ভবানীকে আহ্বান করে মঙ্গল প্রার্থনা ও পুনঃপুন প্রণাম।
Contemplation: Contemplate the named forms while maintaining the rhythm of the syllables.
Awakening and fulfilment
The extended mantra sequences include calls to kindle, awaken, enliven, release and break obstruction. The closing syllable groups invoke Parvati, Purna, Khechari and the Goddess of the Saptashati, asking for mantra fulfilment.
বিস্তৃত মন্ত্রক্রমে দীপ্ত করা, জাগ্রত করা, জীবিত করা, মুক্ত করা ও প্রতিবন্ধ ভাঙার আহ্বান আছে। শেষে পার্বতী, পূর্ণা, খেচরী ও সপ্তশতীর দেবীর কাছে মন্ত্রসিদ্ধি প্রার্থনা।
Contemplation: Recite the supplied sequence as it stands, preserving every sound and transition.
The final key and colophon
The conclusion praises Kunjika as a means of awakening the mantra and stresses reverence in its transmission. It closes with the text’s traditional attributions to Shiva–Parvati dialogues.
উপসংহারে কুঞ্জিকাকে মন্ত্রজাগরণের উপায় বলে স্তব করে শ্রদ্ধাপূর্ণ সংরক্ষণের কথা বলা হয়েছে। শিব-পার্বতী সংবাদের প্রচলিত উৎস-উল্লেখে স্তোত্র শেষ।
Contemplation: Conclude the twenty-second step with a quiet salutation to the Divine Mother.
